Vaughan Williams wrote over 40 minutes of music for the film Scott of the Antarctic but less than half was used in the finished film. The remainder has been unplayed ever since. The whole score has been reassembled into a suite and that is what is recorded here - an what wonderful stuff it is. Although labelled a suite, it is more like a musical version of a film story-board, with the 'movements' almost wanting to coalesce into a single piece. If you know the Sinfonia Antartica (No 7), you will know a lot of the thematic material and orchestral effects. The tone painting of the landscapes is nothing short of genius and I cannot think of any other composer who managed to depict ice, glaciers and blizzards in such a way. As Michael Kennedy writes in his note, it is fascinating to see the elements of the great Landscape movement in the symphony urging to be built into that titanic structure. The organ is there but only as a room-shaking bass, whereas in the symphony it rises up above the orchestra the produce the most shattering climax known in music - making Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001) sound like a sigh. Ten out of the 18 movements are 'new' and are a delight from beginning to end. One of the masterpieces of film music.

Coastal Command is a fine score, written to accompany a documentary about the flying boats which patrolled the North Sea and Icelandic waters during the war. The music varies from extravert to inward seascapes.

The People's Land is a continuous score written to accompany a short film about the National Trust. This is also a first recording and even if you have seen the film, you will not have heard all of it. It is based on English folk tunes with more tone painting to illustrate certain visual aspects of the film. The music is gentle and lyrical but not vintage Vaughan Williams.

The BBC Philharmonic, under Rumon Gamba, is on peak forn and plays this all beautifully. The recording is a Chandos one and is first rate, of course. The notes are written by Michael Kennedy, the leading expert on Vaughan Williams and a friend of the composer.
